New Romance Novel Highlights Male Mental Illness
A Poignant and Vital Love Story
[MARYBOROUGH, QLD, 15 December, 2022] In the newest addition to her Love Down Under series, Queensland author Cynthia Terelst explores male mental illness, the complexity of relationships, love and acceptance. Mental illness is a tough subject for many, and Terelst uses her writing skills in romance to deliver an important message through well-layered characters and a hefty dose of reality.
Terelst is not afraid to cover difficult subjects, and As Busy as a Bee is no exception. The idea to explore male mental illness came after a workplace visit from local organisation, Fraser Coast Mates. Their goal is to help spread the awareness of mental wellness within the community.
Romance novels often explore mental illnesses, such as anxiety, from a female perspective. Terelst felt it was time for readers to see it from the other side. Beau has suffered from anxiety his whole life. We learn how the illness, and his relationships—some toxic, some positive—affected him. By writing in first person, Terelst allows readers to delve into Beau’s mind and watch his thought processes as he spirals.
This is a romance novel, and the essence of the love story is the romance between two childhood friends, Clare and Beau. They were forced apart by necessity and brought together eight years later in this workplace romance. Tension and conflict are built up from the outset, enticing readers to read just one more chapter until they find they’ve read the book in one sitting.
“Romance authors always like to keep ideas fresh for readers,” Terelst says. “The inevitable problems that disrupt the character’s relationship and how they get to their happy-ever-after is unique. You need to keep readers invested in the story.” Early readers reported being left on the edge of their seats, worrying about what was to come.
The subject is serious, but Terelst peppers in humorous elements. Add in some swoon-worthy moments, sexual tension and heart melting scenes, and readers have been left feeling warm and hopeful as they turn the last page. Terelst says that this feeling is the essence she aims to deliver in all of her novels.

Cynthia Terelst is an Australian author based in regional Queensland, where the sun shines 283 days a year. She is a document controls manager by day and a writer by night. She is a contemporary romance writer who likes to share a little bit of history, some Australian scenery and a whole lotta love.
